NEW POLL: Majority now approve of Trump on economy, Dems and MSM adjust talking points

Just this morning the talking heads had to adjust their talk headings.

The President's approval numbers are watched more closely by the Democrats than their own, and the latest numbers show that the booming economy is not just sitting well with Americans who benefit from it, but that those Americans are giving Trump the credit for it.

That's caused a bit of message reworking among Dems and the media. On Sunday morning, for example, CNN's Jake Tapper asked Democratic candidate Sen. Amy Klobuchar pointedly if Trump ought to be getting some credit. On ABC, Jon Karl asked the same basic question of Bernie Sanders.

Both candidates had to smooth over their answers, with Klobuchar offering a platitude about credit going to the workers and businesses and Sanders playing it cute by saying he didn't have to give credit to Trump because he'll "take all the credit he wants."

But when it comes to the American public, polling shows that credit is being given anyway. The new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll shows that a majority, 51%, approve of Trump's handling of the economy. That is, interestingly, the same percent who disapprove of Trump overall.

It's the third straight poll where his numbers have climbed on the issue.

Also in the poll, 48% of respondents favored not continuing to investigate Trump or impeaching him, but letting him finish out the term with no more hearings. That's opposed to the 49% combined who either favor impeachment now (17%) or continuing to investigate (32%).

In a separate CNN poll last week, as PJM made note, "69% think Congress ought to investigate the origins of the Justice Department's inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 election, including 76% of Democrats, 69% of independents and 62% of Republicans."

So the electorate by a majority approve of Trump's handling of the economy, a split decision (leaning to plurality) opposed to impeachment, and by a majority believe Congress should investigate exactly what the Obama administration was up to when looking into Trump's campaign.

If I was a Democrat, yeah, I'd be adjusting my talking points, too. No wonder Speaker Pelosi is taking drastic steps.
