Raphael Warnock politicizes the meaning of Easter and gets a swift theological lesson

Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia tried to twist the meaning of Easter to fit his liberal political agenda and got a swift lesson in theology in response.

Warnock, who served as a senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, tweeted that the meaning of Easter transcended beyond the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Traditional Biblical Christianity posits that the meaning of the faith is summed up by the resurrection of Jesus, who died on the cross for the sins of humanity.

"The meaning of Easter is more transcendent than the resurrection of Jesus Christ," Warnock said in the tweet on Easter Sunday.

"Whether you are Christian or not, through a commitment to helping others we are able to save ourselves," he added.

Some Christians were quick to pounce on the theologically questionable pronouncement from the reverend.

"No, actually, that's the meaning," replied Dan McLaughlin of National Review.

"What kind of Reverend would say something like this. Jesus Christ died and then rose again to take the sins of the world away. You are poisoning the minds of Christians for political purposes," responded Samuel Williams, a disabled veteran.

"With all due respect, this is literally the opposite of what the Gospel says. Ephesians 2 states that clearly. Faith alone, Christ alone," responded former ESPN producer Jason Romano. "We should always help others. But man that's now (sic) how we're saved. Romans, Ephesians, the Gospels all make it clear we can't save ourselves. If we could, then Jesus dying on the cross for nothing."

"This is a great example of the classic heresy of Pelagianism: humans have the free will to achieve human perfection without divine grace," replied another critic.

Warnock was called out by black pastors in December for supporting abortion in what they saw as a betrayal of traditional Christian and biblical values.

"We implore you to uphold the Biblical defense of life and to fight against the systemic racism of abortion," read the letter from 25 black pastors.
